Three Things Thursday

1. After weeks of debate, Makenna finally decided to turn in her application to try to run for Little Miss Friendly. She is the living logo of our local Southwest Washington Fair which will be August 17-22. Check out the website HERE. Her first interview is Monday and then she will learn on Thursday if she will be one of the lucky little girls in the running. She had to include a photo with her application so here were a couple I took. She loves Taylor Swift and I think she looks a little bit like her, don't you?
2. Due to the fact we drove a billion miles last week, okay, it was just 3,000, we are having a garage sale to try and compensate for all the money we spent on gas. Plus, as a bonus we can get rid of more clutter around this place. Every time we do this I find it easier and easier to get rid of things that aren't important. Very cleansing. Anyone who is local, come check it out. We'll be open at 8am.

3. I'm still running. It's hard to get pics and document when I don't have a "real" event. I do admit that I've been frustrated lately. My knee actually hurts worse from all the riding around on our vacation than from running. I just hope it can hang in there as I keep adding training miles. I'm in the middle of an awesome product review. Watch for that soon along with the giveaway.

Welcome to my new followers!!!! Each one of you keeps me going.

The Most Meaningful Word

I saw this link on Facebook today and thought I would share.

The Most Meaningful Word

Guess which word in the English language has more meanings than any other word.

That's right. It's those three little letters that rhyme with fun: the word "run."

If you don't believe me, look it up. According to the big fat Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary, the word "run" has 179 meanings. That's way more than "take" (124 meanings), "break" (122), "turn" (122), "go" (98), "play" (94), and every other word.

There is of course meaning number one: "to go quickly by moving the legs more rapidly than at a walk and in such a manner that in each step all or both feet are off the ground." But what about the other 178? Why, of all the words in the language, is "run" the most meaning-full?

It probably has a lot to do with spatial metaphors. According to Harvard word nerd, Stephen Pinker, people tend to describe events in terms of movement through space, even when the event isn't actually located in space. We gocrazy. We fall in love. We move a meeting from Monday to Tuesday. And when something moves through metaphoric space quickly (more rapidly than at a walk), it runs.

Rivers run. Candidates run. So do colors, computer programs, salmon, and stockings.

Then there are the idiomatic meanings. If you run across a woman who runs around, she might run out on her husband and run off with you–though in the long run, you're likely to run out of gas, feel run down, and (dare I say?) get the runs.

I thought this was interesting. The more I listen the more I realize that the word run/ran, etc. is in A LOT of music out there. I get excited every time I "discover" it when I hadn't noticed it before. I'm definitely a running nerd.

I'm Back!!!! Giveaway Reminder

We have officially survived our vacation. We got home this afternoon. I have to say that I have fretted over not being able to have "real" internet access and a way to post on my blog. I've worked so hard for my followers who are my major support team that I didn't want to leave you all hanging for so long. Plus, reading all of your blogs gives me constant inspiration. I'm just glad to be back. Being with family and escaping our normal lives was a nice break though.

Now that I'm back I wanted to remind all of you about my ROAD ID giveaway that will end tonight at midnight. Really anyone who has entered by the time I get up tomorrow will be included. Considering I haven't slept more than a few hours each night the chances for a decent extension in the morning looks good. Click HERE for giveaway details.

It looks like we drove over 2750 miles on our trip. We traveled through Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, & Wyoming. Spending time with my family, going to Yellowstone, and just all being together and laughing was something I needed badly. I covered many miles on foot on our adventure too. I can't wait to get a little sleep and then jump right back into my marathon training.

I missed all of you and can't wait to catch up on everyone's blogs. Watch for another giveaway later this week :)

ROAD ID GIVEAWAY

It's Giveaway Time!!!!!

One For The Road.....pretty fitting and great timing considering we are hours or possibly minutes away from hitting the road. We will begin our road trip while most normal and sane people are snug in their beds. We have a pretty decent truck ride ahead of us with two girls and a weiner dog. I'm hoping we arrive before too late tomorrow.

Now back to what you really want to hear about ~ ROAD ID. I'm so excited that they are sponsoring a giveaway on my blog.

Here's some info on the ROAD ID ~ if you are a runner, cyclist, triathlete or just a person who doesn't sit on the couch all day, Road ID is for you. This awesome piece of gear not only looks good but it could save your life. In the event of an accident, if you can't speak for yourself, your Road ID will. Available in 6 different styles. It's not just a piece of gear - it's peace of mind.

Road ID is wearable identification tags for athletes. Their customizable ID tags are made of laser-engraved stainless steel and come in various forms to suit your preference for wearing the tag, either on your wrist, ankle, shoe, or around your neck. The ID tag provides First Aid medical responders vital information should a mishap render you unconscious or unable to speak. Personalized information may include emergency contact numbers, medical history, current medications, blood type, even your favorite motto, etc. In addition, Road ID offers an interactive version for all their products, allowing first responders to access other vital information via telephone and internet. This extra feature requires a nominal online subscription fee after the first year. Click HERE for more info.

I myself have wanted/needed a ROAD ID for some time. I don't have a running partner so 99.9% of the time I am out on the road alone. I'm especially thankful to have one now thinking back to my first marathon and others following where anything could have happened and I was all alone. There really is no good excuse not to have one. I will do a full review of mine once I get it. My husband is already sighing in relief. At least he'll feel a little bit better when I head out the door.

I have chosen The Wrist ID Elite in black but I'm thinking the green will not be far behind. I plan on wearing it A LOT so that is why I went with the black first.

What You Will Win ~ A ROAD ID eCard to choose the Road ID model of your choice.

Three Things Thursday

1. Vacation ~ It's been a long time coming. It has been 4 years since Jason has been on a real vacation. Between job chaos, etc. we just couldn't do it. He finally has vacation time so we had already planned to go to Idaho to visit some family there. We are also going to try and take the girls to Yellowstone National Park. We weren't set on a date but now we have decided to leave late tonight. It is roughly a 12 hour drive. I'm sure we will be making several stops along he way between the girls and the dog. The last time I was there I had ZERO access to internet so I may be MIA for awhile. We are planning to be home sometime on Sunday the 25th. I'm packing my running shoes in hopes of logging a few miles while I'm there.

2. Grandpa ~
Another reason we were going was to see family while we were there which included my Grandpa Moore. We just got the call on Monday that he passed away that afternoon. It kills me that we missed seeing him by just days. He was an awesome man and I loved him so much. We'll miss you Grandpa!!!

3. GIVEAWAYS!!!! Be on the lookout. I have been lucky enough to have a couple companies offer me some great items to review and pass on that luck to you.

Summer has been crazy. It seems like I am constantly busy. It has been hard to get my runs in but I am determined. After we get back I am going to buckle down and stick to my training schedule even if it kills me :) I'm so thankful for all of you who follow my journey and keep me motivated.

Shout out to my friend Harmony at Keep On Keeping On. She was featured this morning on The Marathon Show. They were looking for marathoners in training so I suggested her. Bart Yasso was their guest today. Harmony and I were both brought up during the hour he was on. How awesome is that? Check it out HERE. We are mentioned around 4 minutes in and towards the end.

Cheddar Challenge

Today was the Cheddar Challenge. It is especially fun for me since I graduated from Toledo and that's where the run happens. Every year Toledo has a Cheese Day festival that includes a parade, car show, etc. Lots of fun things happening. It's usually a chance to see some of my classmates that I don't get to see often.
I debated on whether to run with my handheld or my water pack. I was running the 8 mile and every time I have there has only been one water stop. Not cool for someone who sweats like I do and needs frequent water intake. I decided on the backpack since I'm still working on running with my handheld without it driving me crazy. It has been hot too so I wanted to make sure I had enough. So off I headed to the starting line looking more like I was going hiking than on a run. I guess it's better to look like a dork than die on the course, right?
There were many friends among the runners today. My friend, Tressa, who has just begun her running story HERE, was there with her family to support her husband, Jesse, who was running the 5K. He is in the green shirt below. My friend, Clarissa, also participated in the 5K with Traci & Brook. Jason's cousin, Rhonda was also there. She is a super fast runner. We end up running many of the same events together. It was nice to see people I know.
Rhonda is in the pink skirt. We were having a good time before the start. I was also enjoying the rare feeling of being in the front of the pack :)

This was about halfway. I told Jason to meet me again with about 1.5 miles to go so I could dump the pack. I knew I wouldn't need it after that point. It was hot. I'm glad that I had it but was really looking forward to running without it. I caught up to and passed another runner here. About a mile down the road she passed me and we talked about CEP socks. I caught her again shortly afterwards and she never passed me again. Yes!!!! It's the small victories :)

Thankfully, Tressa was still taking pics and caught me coming to the finish. Her son, Peyton, was the best cheerleader ever. I clapped with him as I finished :) You can see Jason scrambling to grab the camera out of the red truck behind me. He had followed me along most of the course, took my backpack, and then headed to the finish. He didn't think I would finish that fast so he was chatting with our friends. So in the end I reenacted my finish below.

Here's the nice pic that Tressa took of Jesse and I at the finish and then the pic when Jesse realized just how sweaty I get when I run. Sorry Jesse :) I'm glad you guys were there.

Rhonda and I at the finish.
A quick pic at home before getting cleaned up. We stayed for the parade and the free cheese sandwiches afterwards. The sun decided to come out and it got very hot. I love looking at the cars at the car show but we didn't stay long before heading home. The girls were hot, hungry, and tired so it was time to call it a day.

FINISH TIME ~ 1:23:58 / 8 Miles

Three Things Thursday ~ Very Late Edition

I guess without planning it this post with not only include 3 things but they will all start with the letter "F." This last week has been crazy busy with a lot of good things but also sadness. I'm hoping to keep it as short as possible.

1. Fire Pit ~ We've wanted one since we moved in last July. We had a burn area in roughly the same spot, which you can see. We wanted something nicer and safer to roast things on and more importantly for smores :) I took a few shots so you could see the backyard and fire pit area.
My garden on the right of the pic.
Our house and tent.
A rare pic of me during a family event since I'm usually the one snapping the pics, unless it's a self portrait :)

2. Fireworks!!! ~ I had to post a few pics I took on the 4th.

This one looks like a bird so I had to add it.

A pic from the grand finale.

3. Farewell ~ Some of you know we have two cats named Edward & Bella. We have had them almost a year and they are a huge part of our lives and family. I feed them in the morning but also hang out with them on the back porch and give them a little more food right before I go to bed. Last Friday, Bella wasn't there before bed. I didn't think much of it since I thought she'd show up soon. In the morning she still wasn't there for breakfast. That NEVER happens. We had to run errands that day. When we came back Edward was sad and acting funny. I knew he was missing Bella. The girls and I walked our whole road asking people if they had seen her. Nothing. I hung out with Edward a lot that afternoon and before bed I sat out on the porch with him. He climbed up in my lap and wrapped his little paws around my neck and hugged his face to mine. He loved hugs and licking your chin. It was getting late and I had to run the next morning so I gave him some food and went to bed. The next morning there were no cats for breakfast. I tried not to worry during my race and when we came home we searched our property and the neighbors property behind us. Nothing. I was tired and on the walk back to the house I just cried the whole way. I just had a terrible feeling.
Jump to Monday night. Still no cats. I hadn't given up and still went out on the porch to call them before bed. I had an eery feeling as I went out the door like something was watching me. It was dead quiet. I called once in one direction and as soon as I started to call again my whole backyard lit up with coyote howls and screams. I was instantly freaked and mad at the same time. There had to be 8-10 of them and they were just yards away. I hopped back in the house for Jason but by the time he came out they were gone. Since then we have discovered that several people on our road have lost cats this week. They are just roaming back and forth. I think since they got Bella they just came back and waited for the opportunity to get Edward. I just wish I had heard them sooner and I would have locked Edward up in the house.

To make things a little more scary, the girls wanted to sleep in the tent since we finally had some nice weather. That wasn't happening unless one of us slept in the tent, too. So Tuesday night all three of us girls were in the tent. Right before they fell asleep we heard something. I could tell there were at least two. I called Jason with my cell phone but they heard him coming and took off by the time he came out. In the pic above you can see how close the tent is to the house.

Like I said, it has been a crazy week and none of this is running related but I couldn't not share the good and the bad. I had to mention them. They were the best cats ever and we will miss them a lot.
