Foot Doctor Results ~ With A Twist

I originally went to my Foot & Ankle Specialist doctor on 11/2.  He took X-rays and didn't find anything crazy except for some mild swelling and irritation above my toes.  Went home with some orthotics and scheduled a re-check for 2 weeks.  After taking a couple test runs and extra rest days, my right foot began to feel better.  I still had a few sharp pains, but they were getting less intense.  I began to feel really good and a lot stronger.

Flash forward to the Thursday before my re-check.  I ran 3.5 miles on my treadmill.  Hopped off and did some weights, lunges, jumping jacks, and stretches.  Made a quick pit stop.  I was feeling great so I decided to hop back on for a few more miles.  I ended up with a 7.5+ mile run.  I was really starting to pick up my pace and feel good.  After my run I showered and went into town to run some errands.  I was dropping something off for a friend at her house.  I left it inside her screen door, turned to go up the concrete steps, and BAM!!! I was flung to the left and on the ground.  It happened so quick that I was up immediately and in my car in seconds.  I was hoping no one in the neighborhood witnessed my graceful trip to the ground.  I still have no clue how I could have twisted my ankle where I did.  I had to have stepped in the only place possible.  I doubt I could even reenact the event.  As my left ankle twisted all the way to the side it made a terrible sound.  I have twisted my ankle far worse in the past so I wasn't really too worried.  I figured I would just rest it until the Half in Seattle that is coming up this Sunday, 11/25.  I went to the grocery store and when I got out of the car it was extremely sore...not good.  I used the cart to finish the trip, picked up my girls from school, and then quickly got home so I could get it up and start icing it.

I got up Friday morning and it was sore but way better.  I really didn't think much of it.  I just figured they could take a quick look at it when I went in to re-check my other foot.  I got to my appt, told the assistant what happened, and they immediately wanted to do x-rays.  I seriously thought it was a waste of time.  It was feeling better.  After the x-rays I went back to the exam room to wait for the doctor.  While I was waiting they had one view of my x-rays up.  I didn't see anything to be concerned about so I just sat back and waited.  My doctor came in pretty quick and got the story, as I start rambling on about how excited I was that my right foot is better and about running the half in Seattle, he starts looking at all 3 views of my foot.   INSERT OMINOUS MUSIC HERE........

I saw his face change and his next words were, I've got some bad news.  My heart instantly froze.  Then I began to panic inside though my doctor and his assistant didn't have a clue.  He told me that not only did I have a fracture, I had two fractures along with a tendon being torn away from the fibula.  What???  How was this happening?  Before I could blink, they had me in an aircast boot.  Next came the dreaded words, rest, elevate, and ice.  Also as little walking as possible and definitely NO RUNNING.  I have a 3 week re-check appt on December 7th.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed for good news at that one.  Is it too early to make a Christmas Wish?  All I want for Christmas is to be able to run again on strong, healthy feet.

Friday was a blur.  I look and feel awful trying to move around in my boot.  Saturday was a true pity party.  I probably broke down and cried every hour or so.  So many emotions but mostly fear.  I'm so scared that this won't heal and I'll have to have surgery.  Since being called obese back on October 2nd, I have successfully worked off 18 pounds by just focusing on eating healthy, smaller portions, and slowly increasing my mileage.  Now that is gone.  I don't want to gain any of it back.  I'm frustrated that I will have to start over.  I don't want any of my bad habits to return.  Running is as beneficial to my mental health as it is my physical.  I have not been without it since I started my journey in 2006.

I'm beyond sad to know that I will not be running the Seattle Half this weekend.  I was so pumped to tackle the course and the weather.  I was feeling so good about it.  I'm also very sad about being out a medal that I know I would have earned.  I love my race bling.  This will be my first ever DNS and I hope it is my last.

My blog and all the amazing friends I have met from it are going to be what gets me through.  We have had crazy weather here and several power outages which has made updating all of you hard.  I also have to sit at my desk which makes my foot hurt.  I finally got an opportunity to catch up today and took it.  You will probably be hearing a lot from me since I already have cabin fever.

I'm asking for any and all advice I can get.  I want to stay as active as possible without hurting my foot/ankle.  Any thoughts???  Anyone else have this kind of injury???

Thanks again for all of your support.

Good luck to everyone running their turkey trots, running Seattle, and all the other races that are happening over this Thanksgiving Break!!!

Thankful Tuesday

I know the month of November is about being thankful.  In my life I have been reminded that every day is something you should be thankful for.  I am glad for this time of year though for more people to realize and share what they are thankful for.

Many people just focus on the negatives but everything usually happens for a reason.  That's what you usually hear.  In my life I have tried really hard to focus on the positives.  Here are some examples.

1.  I lost my Mom 8 years ago.  It's something I still deal with on a daily basis.  Some days are better than others.  Some things that I'm thankful for from this is to appreciate the fact that I'm lucky enough to be a Mother.  From losing Mom, I made the decision to get healthy not only for myself, but for my family as well.  I never want my girls to go through what I did.  It was a kick start to an 80+ pound weight loss and discovering my love for running.

2.  My recent foot and knee injuries.  Despite the frustration and pain I have worked really hard to try and overcome these issues.  It's an ongoing problem.  Just when my knees start to feel better, my foot is causing stress.  That being said,  I did run last week and I have continued with my cross training.  I am very thankful for every run and every mile that I complete.  There are those that have never ran at all.

3.  My health and family.  This goes along with #1.  I can't even grasp how many amazing friends and family members I have lost in the past few years.  My Dad & Little M have also given me scares but are healthy now.  Many of my friends have and currently are dealing with loss & health issues.  I can't say it enough that we all need to love and appreciate our family and friends.  Never pass up an opportunity to touch someone's life in a positive way, give someone a hug, a smile, and always tell them how much you love them.

This doesn't even begin to cover what I'm thankful for.  I want to say how thankful I am for my husband, my children, and my family.  They truly are the center of everything.  I'm incredibly thankful for my blog.  Through it I have made and met so many amazing and inspiring people.  I'm now lucky enough to call many of them friends.

Life can be crazy and stressful.  Try to take the time and appreciate all the amazing blessings that you do have.  There truly is always something to be thankful for.

Pain In The Foot

It feels like I'm always trying to catch back up.  To make a very long story short, I've been at the hospital a lot since last week.  My Mom passed away 8 years ago.  Since then I have continued to check up on and visit her boyfriend that was living with her at the time she passed.  His health has always concerned me.  Even though we weren't "real" family I knew it was something my Mom would want me to do.  I got the call last Thursday that he was in the ICU with a huge list of problems.  I'm thankful that his family called me.  I'm emotionally wrung out knowing this is one of my last connections to my Mom.  It's been hard on my girls, too.  Luckily, he seems to be improving the last few days.

In the beginning of October I began my renewed fight to lose weight and improve my running.  A few weeks in I began to notice a pain on the top of my right foot.  It was totally random.  I ran the Snohomish Half with Makenna and didn't have a single issue.  I did lots of cross training and then that following Wednesday, jumped on the treadmill.  I felt great, even fast (for me.)  I was pumped.  My 4-5 mile run turned into an 8+ mile run.  I was super excited until I began my cool down.  There it was.  The dreaded pain.  As I ran errands in town on Thursday it began to cause me to limp.  I made an appointment for the next day at our foot and ankle specialist.  Everyone I spoke to thought it was a stress fracture.  I have great pain tolerance and with the way it felt I was worried about it.  After X-rays of both feet, a stress fracture was ruled out.  I had some swelling above my 2nd & 3rd toes and it just ached.  They will recheck me after 2 weeks and see what I should do from there.  I was given insoles, told to rest a few days, ice, massage, and ibuprofen.  Running is my huge stress relief and my main mode of ridding myself of these extra layers.  I've been freaking out.  Even though my foot was still off yesterday, I took it on a test run.  Depending on how I land my foot, I can still feel it.  I just tried to be careful.  No new pain but there is obviously still an issue.  My plan is to proceed with caution.  I AM NOT GIVING UP.

Running Outfit Suggestions???
I basically only have 2 weeks until Seattle.  I know it is a tough course and I really want to do well.  The thought of having to walk it and be out in our super fun November weather doesn't sound like fun. Another thing I need to work on is finding the best running outfit option for this race.  I usually get warm pretty fast when I run.  My current jacket just holds the heat and moisture in.  I've been debating either a new jacket and/or long sleeve top layer.  Any good suggestions???  I also usually wear skirts since I love wearing my compression socks.  Any ideas for my bottom layer???  Finding the right combo will be tough.  I want to try and figure something out soon so I can take it on a test run.  Any help would be great.

New Music Friday

I've heard many of the songs off of Green Days new album, Uno.  Here are the links to it and also one of the singles.

Weight Update
Since being called obese on October 2nd, I have lost 13 pounds.  Increased exercise, smaller portions, healthier foods, and lots of water!!!

Trick Or Treat

Happy Halloween!!!  Any fun plans?  When my girls get home from school we will be headed out to score some candy.  Makenna is planning on being Katniss from The Hunger Games & Makinley is going to be Hermione from Harry Potter.  We have found a few hot spots that actually give out full size candy bars...awesome!!!  I have not had one single piece of chocolate/candy in my mouth this whole month and I plan to keep it that way.  After starting out the month at a Dr's appt where the nurse started out with the normal height/weight measurements, I was then scolded for being obese.  Yikes! Since that appt. I have kicked it into high gear.  I'm back to healthy eating and smaller portions.  I've been building up my mileage again as well.  I've been trying to be careful about it though since I really don't want to have any more knee issues.  I know taking off the extra weight will help.  I can always keep my fingers crossed it will make me faster...right?  I have to go back for a follow-up appt. the week after Thanksgiving.  There's some motivation.  I plan to show that nurse I mean business.

Instead of eating extra calories today, I plan on burning them.  I see a treadmill in my future.  I dare all of you to keep your hands out of the candy bowls today.  If I can do it, you can too.  Let's face it, it takes forever to burn off all those extra calories on a treadmill.  We are heading into all the yummy holiday seasons.  It's going to be hard but I'm not giving up.  When I originally lost all of my weight I started my journey in December.  I figured if I could make it through that month, then I could do anything.  Here I go again.

As part of my ab/stretching/weight workout I've decided to also add planking.  It seems to be going around.  I decided I would see how long I could do it last night.  Here you go.
Not sure if those are good results or not.  At least it's something to build on.

Another thing I'm not giving up on until the end, getting into the Top 25.  Only 2 days left to vote.  I'd love to get as many votes as I can before this is over.  Once again, thank you to all who have been voting for me and dealing with me harassing you about it :)

I hope you all have a safe and wonderful Halloween!!!

Snohomish River Run Half Marathon 2012

I actually started this adventure on Friday.  I made a 225+ mile round trip up to Mukilteo to pick up our race packets and purchase one of the parking passes for race day.  With the weather and this being Makenna's longest run, I didn't want to risk missing a shuttle bus.  This way we could just enjoy the experience and not be stressed about finishing in time.  Have I mentioned Makenna is only 11?  That's right, my sweet girl was actually going to be running her first half marathon.  So exciting!

My alarm went off Saturday morning at a cruel 4AM.  I quickly dressed and tried to get as much done as possible before I had to wake up Makenna.  We had our outfits laid out the night before so that helped.  I had all of our race essentials along with dry clothes for afterwards in our Team Bring It tote.  Love it.  We hopped in the car and headed North.  We listened to the new Taylor Swift CD, Red, to help pass the time.  It also helped to keep me calm once the heavy rain hit just past Olympia.  Not a fun driving experience.  I had some white knuckles by the time we made it to the parking lot.
Since we had some time to spare we made a porta-potty trip and then headed back to the warmth of the car when the rain started up again.  I went back and forth on whether to run with my jacket.  I always get so hot when I run.  It's a pain having something hanging off me once I have to take it off.  With the wind and the rain I decided I better just wear it.

Waiting In The Car.
We left the warmth of the car to brave to pre-race madness.  My usual pre-race porta-potty trip was a half an hour wait.  Due to so many people attempting to empty their tanks, the race was pushed back to an 8:45AM start.
I knew that Melanie aka Tall Mom and Alma (The Average Woman's Running Blog) were going to be there.  I was lucky enough to see Jennifer (Runner...Maybe) earlier :)  I scanned the crowd and was surprised to see so many tall people.  I quickly spotted Melanie in her pink jacket.  Makenna was so excited to actually meet some of my blogger buddies.  She kinda got shy as we headed over.  Of course, I wasn't going to let a photo op pass me by.  I quickly recruited a nice guy to take our pic.
Makenna, Me, Melanie, & Alma
See Mel in her pink jacket & white hat?  We are behind her and to the left.

Before we knew it we were bunching up for the official start.  I was glad we were finally going since Makenna was starting to get cold from the wind and rain.  I knew once we started she would warm up.
Here We Go!!!

Mile 1 ~ The biggest part of the course was on a rural road that had been completely closed down for the race.  Once we hit that, the wind and rain started picking up.  It howled so loud in my ears I could barely hear my music, even with my Yurbuds.  The wind kept blowing Makenna's earbuds out.  I saw many people lose their hats the first few miles.  My legs felt very heavy at first.

Mile 2 ~ More of the same.  We saw the 10K turn around and Makenna was wishing we were turning around, too.  She was feeling good though.  The wind was the only thing bugging her.  My legs had warmed up and were feeling good.

Mile 3 ~ Did I mention this was a mostly straight road with just a few turns here and there?  That got a little boring.  It had been awhile since I had ran with music so I was thankful I brought my earphones for my iPhone to help distract me.  I had it just loud enough to hear so I could keep watch over Makenna.  She had my iPod and was loving running with it.  She questioned a few of the songs I had on it though.  Probably songs before her time :)

Mile 4 ~ Out of no where there was suddenly the worst poo smell ever.  It was terrible.  That's saying something since dairy farms and other such stink doesn't usually bother me.  That being said, we both tried our best not to breathe through our noses.  At this point we were already seeing some of the lead runners heading back our way.

Mile 5 ~ It was roughly around here when we saw Tall Mom headed towards us.  We were waving and Makenna and Tall Mom exchanged a high five.  She was smiling a lot after that.  Definitely a great time for a pick me up.  Seeing friends and knowing the turn around was close helped us pick up a little speed.

Mile 6 ~ After we made the turn we were able to see other runners behind us.  I tend to not look back during a race fearing there won't be anyone there.  I was happy to see we weren't last even though we had been passed many times.  We were happy to see Jen again in a super cute running skirt.  Soon there was a water station where Makenna took her first ever GU.  I was worried it would make her sick or she'd get grossed out.  She downed it quickly with some water and kept on going.  It was crazy how well she was doing.

Mile 7-8 ~ At this point we were beyond soaked.  After the turn around I had removed my jacket.  I could almost immediately feel myself get faster.  Things were good until around Mile 8.  I could tell Makenna was feeling it and we were slowing down.  She kept doing the math in her head and knew we had less than a 10K to go.

Mile 9 ~ We kept speeding up and slowing down.  You could see a water stop way up ahead.  Whenever we had something to run too, Makenna picked it back up.  At this point she was wanting to be done.  I was starting to feel cold and thirsty.  That has only happened once before.  Not sure why since I hydrated very well leading up to the race.  It was a crazy feeling being thirsty in the middle of a rain storm.

Mile 10-11 ~ Just another strip on the road, past the parking lot, and then we turned in to start running on the trail.  It was covered in leaves and very uneven in some places.  I didn't want Makenna to wipe out now so I made sure and tried to give her a heads up whenever I spotted a dangerous spot.  The trail was narrow and an out and back part of the course.  It was fun to see other runners again.

Mile 12 ~ At every water stop I made sure Makenna took something.  I usually always take a water and whatever electrolyte drink they are providing.  Even in the cold and rain I knew I was sweating like crazy and I needed to keep everything in balance.  Makenna was beyond excited when we turned and she knew she "only" had to make it back to the finish line.

Mile 13-Finish ~ Once we made it back to where we first got on the trail we were so happy.  It was kind of a pain to have so many random people on the trail to dodge and go around.  Knowing we were so close, we just wanted to go.  I suddenly spotted Tall Mom & Alma heading back to their car on the trail, right before the last corner to the finish.  I was so excited we were able to see them again and that they would get to witness Makenna finish her first half.  Makenna and I held hands on the whole straight away to the finish.  My tracker had quit around Mile 7 so I really had no idea what time it was.  I was just enjoying the experience with Makenna and was shocked to see the clock and realize we were finishing under 2:30.
Makenna & I right before the finish.

FINISH TIME ~ 2:23:51

After crossing the finish we had them clip our timing chips off and grabbed our medals.  I had her walk around a bit before jumping in line for the post race food.  They had water, chips & salsa, bananas, oranges, 3 kinds of soup and bread.  It was a bit of a wait which gave them time to get finish times up.  They had just posted our times on the board. After looking I discovered that Makenna placed first in the 18 & under age group.  What???  First time running a half marathon and she wins something.  So cool for her.  We walked over to the award table where they presented her with a very big and very heavy beer mug.  They quickly told her it was for root beer :)  The rain was still coming down so we took our soup to the car.  Luckily I brought towels to save our seats.  I was hoping we'd find somewhere to change clothes fairly close.
 Waiting In Line For Food
Makenna With Her Prize

We made it back to the freeway with no issues and were very surprised and relieved to see a Rest Area sign almost immediately.  We took advantage of that and laughed and giggled as we tried to change in the big stall together.  For some reason we had the hardest time getting Makenna's dry socks on.  It was hilarious.  Nothing like dry clothes to brighten your day.
We stopped at Mongolian Grill on the way back home.  It's one of our favorite places but we hardly get to go since it's so far away.  We both got a warm treat (Caramel Apple Cider) from Starbuck's and hit the road for the long drive home.  It wasn't long and it got very quiet in the backseat.  She didn't wake up until we were about 2 miles from home.
Makenna & I with our medals and her mug.

 Pretty Cool.

Still smiling before falling asleep.  Love her!

Considering this was the first ever SRR, I think overall it was a great experience.

Pros
Flat course.  I'm not going to lie.  Huge bonus for me.

Very friendly volunteers.  At every water stop and course change they were always smiling and friendly.

Great selection of food at the finish.  There was 3 choices of soup and it was delicious.

Pretty course on the trail by the river.

Cons
Poo smell at Mile 4 and again on the way back.

Needed more porta-potty's.

Had to wait in line to get water from a dispenser after the finish.  They needed to have bottled water, etc. that you could just grab quickly afterwards.

Since the course is closed, no spectators for most of the race.

Photographers needed to take more pics, especially because of the closed course and lack of family/friends being able to do this for you.  Also more than one pic at the finish.  Wish I had more pics of us together.

Lack of covered areas to escape the rain at the finish.  I had a hard time keeping my food dry.

The race medal only says Snohomish River Run???  I admit, I run for the bling.  In this case Makenna was very disappointed that her medal didn't say Half Marathon.  I might get it engraved on the back for her so she feels like it's not just an ordinary medal.

That all being said, those are all very easy fixes...except for the smell :) I'm not complaining at all, just some suggestions on things that I think would help make it even better.  I would totally sign up for this race again.  Even with the wind and the rain, the experience I was able to share with Makenna was priceless.  I'm beyond proud of her.  She even stated that she might run another one as long as it wasn't raining :)  She might have caught the racing bug :)

A special thanks to Melanie (Tall Mom) and Alma for not just sharing in our day and helping to make Makenna feel special but also for including her in your race reports.  You can check them out below.

Only a couple days left to vote.  I'm behind and would appreciate any vote I can get.  Thank You!!!

Are You A Tough Chik?

Last week I had a fellow blogger send me information about being a Tough Chick.  Here's a quick intro into what they stand for.

Our mission is to encourage each other to get out there and have fun!  We see all team members as contributing members, whether you podium or persevere, all that matters is that you are out there doing what YOU love to do.

A lot of teams out there focus their attention on attracting only elite athletes, but that’s just not what Tough Chik exclusively represents.  So we threw out the “rules” and decided to design a team for everyone.

I have so many goals for 2013.  I decided that being a Tough Chik was one of them.  I can't wait to get my uniform and get started.

Please click HERE to get all the info on becoming a Tough Chik.  There is now less than a week to join the team.  I'm so super excited to be a part of Team Tough Chik 2013.

Tough Chik has Women's Casual & Performance Clothing.  Running, Cycling, Triathlon, & Walking are all covered.  Click HERE to check them all out.  These are a few of my favorites.

Love this!  So many of my non-running friends always use the phrase, "I'd only run if something was chasing me."

Green is my favorite color.  Nuff said.

I LOVE hoodies.  With the quote, "this is what tough looks like" it only gets cooler.

They also have a section for Girls.  It's never to soon to start being a Tough Chik.

Who else is going to be part of the 2013 Tough Chik Team???

Only 1 week left to help keep my blog in the Top 25 Health & Wellness Mom Blogs - 2012 Circle of Moms.  Remember you can vote once a day until Nov. 1st.  Once again thank you for your votes.  I've always found it hard to ask people for stuff, especially when it depends on having to do reminders daily.  Your support is appreciated!

Motivational Monday

It's so hard to get back into a schedule, especially when it feels like you are starting over.  I continued to run even through taking care of my Grandma but the stress wreaked havoc on my body.  When I'm stressed I tend to eat more and somewhere along the way my metabolism decided to come to a screeching halt.  Not cool.

On October 1st, I became refocused and determined to get my body back.  I worked so hard the first time around.  I swore I'd never be here again.  I'm not giving up.  I always weigh in on Mondays.  This week I'm down 2 pounds.  I'll take it.  I also ran 8.75 miles.  I have my eyes on a goal.  I want to reach my optimal weight loss range by Dec. 24th.  Think I can do it?  That's 9 weeks of running and hard work that I'm willing to do.  I will run 2 half marathons along the way.

Proof that I am a sweaty beast after I run or workout.

After losing my Mom 8 years ago, these two became my main motivation.  I want to be a healthy and happy Mom for them and to be a good example.

Something else that is keeping my motivated.  Trying to keep my blog in the Top 25 Health & Wellness Mom Blogs - 2012 Circle of Moms.  Thank you to all who have been voting.  You can vote once a day until Nov. 1st.

New Music Friday

I'm starting off with my very favorite songs right now.  One of my very favorite training runs was with my best friend in an awesome thunder/lightning/rain storm.  It was so cool.  This song makes me think of that moment.  Love it!!!

I can't remember if I ever posted about this artist.  I heard this song once and was hooked.  I'm adding another one of their singles as a bonus.

I have plenty of Kelly Clarkson songs on my iPod.  Here's her new single that I'll be adding.  I think she's super talented and has a great voice.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.  Good luck to all of you who are running/racing!!!

Don't forget to vote for my blog ~ HERE
Thank You!!!!
