Saturday, 10/6/12 Pre-Run Pic
Since Jason was at school and Makinley was at a birthday party I decided that Makenna and I should use that opportunity to participate in a local run. It was the 4th year of the event but the first time we had run it. It was pretty cold but clear skies and beautiful. We got there with just enough time to get registered and talk to a few friiends we knew.
The event offered a 2 mile walk, 5K, and an 8K. We decided on the 8K to get more road time for Makenna. This was her first official event in a couple years. She has ran several 5K's and a 10K as well as the time she has been training with me lately.
The gun went off and away we went. She was cold at first and felt like she was getting side cramps once around mile 2. She pushed through it. She was also very happy when I explained the concept of road kills. She officially got 2. We figured out later they were 5K runners when they turned at the loop and we had to keep going. The extra part of the course for the 8K group seemed to go on forever. Once we took our last loop, Makenna got more pumped up again. It's always nice to know you are actually headed towards the finish line.
As we made the last corner to the finish I told Makenna to go ahead so she could finish in front of me. She did, but only by 3 seconds :) What made her day is that she won first in her age division.
She celebrated with a maple bar :) I also won a gift certificate to one of our local restaurants, so it was well worth the time to get some more miles under her belt and share hopefully one of many future running experiences with her.
Congrats to all of my running buddies who ran over the weekend!!!!
